The horses which are popular have low odds because there are many people betting on them. Unpopular horses have high odds but for them to win is a long shot. There are a number of different ways in which you can bet. Once you choose your horse, you can then bet in three basic ways. The first way only pays back if you horse wins. The second way is known as place. This type pays back if your horse wins or comes in the second place. The third way is known as show, and it pays back if your horse wins or comes in the second or third place. The first way pays the highest. These are the basic ways which you can employ in the initial stages of learning how to bet on horses. There are many other combinations which various venues offer.

To place your bet you will need to go to the window and tell the cashier the name of the track, the number of the horse and the number of the race. You must also tell him what kind of bet you want to place and how much money you want to wager. Once the cashier gives you the ticket always remember to check that the information on the ticket is exactly what you gave. Keep the ticket in a safe place. After the race is over, wait for the official results.  If you have won wait for the amount to be displayed and then collect your winnings from the ticket booth.
